For the first time, comic book writer and fun person on Twitter, MAGDALENE VISAGGIO comes to Vodka O’Clock to talk about comics, her influences, why she loves Power Rangers and more.

Mags wrote the 12-issue first volume of THE STRONGHOLD; it’s drawn by Kevin Roberts; other creative team members changed during the first volume. Issue 6 came out last week on Comixology. Mags’ other project is ANDREW JACKSON IN SPACE.

STRONGHOLD is a sci-fi apocalyptic story based in New York City after an alien invasion. The aliens have occupied and taken over the society and politics of Earth. Mags and I talked about different influences like POWER RANGERS, BATTLE OF THE PLANETS, VOLTRON and others.

Mags, Kevin and the team revisited the entire project after they already several issues out. So there’s actually old versions of the issues out there in the wild from selling at comics. Mags says it barely resembles the current story. It now takes place after the alien invasion rather than during. Another change was that Mags originally wrote the script The Marvel Way and added dialog after the pages were drawn.

We discussed the writing crutch of narration and when it’s appropriate. We also discussed writing for printed comics vs. Writing for digital and things that are under consideration like page turns and splash pages. Plus, other writing decisions were discussed such as choosing to set the series in a real city such as New York.
